AKRON, Ohio — The next time you pass by Akron-Canton Airport, the buzz you hear may not be the sound of a Boeing 737. Instead, you may hear the buzz of the airport's 60 new bee colonies!
On Tuesday, Akron-Canton Airport announced the new initiative, hosting 60 colonies of bees to help bolster the population in Stark and Summit counties.
The airport says that the initiative is all part of their commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability.
“We are thrilled to be partnering with Hartville Honey Bee Farm on this exciting project,” said Adam Dietry, Assistant Manager of Environmental Services. “As an airport, we have a unique opportunity to do our part to help boost the bee population in our local ecosystem, and we believe that introducing bees to our airfield is an important step in that direction.”
Not only will the airport play a part in aiding the bee population in nearby areas, but they plan to collect honey from the colonies to sell. Proceeds from the sales will go to local environmental initiatives.
According to the airport, feedback on the initiative has been positive from environmental agencies and the local community as well. The airport hopes that this initiative will serve as a model for other airports to follow suit.
