A true hero: Akron firefighter builds program to change young lives

Putting out fires and mentoring youth.

AKRON, Ohio — Jordan Bedell provides youth with valuable life skills: Teamwork, leadership, responsibility and commitment.

The secret? He doesn’t do it alone.

When it comes to being a hero, Jordan Bedell fits the definition in more ways than one.

He’s been working with the Akron Fire Department for about three years, and he says wearing two hats is like second nature.

Although saving lives makes him a hero in itself, it’s the hat he wears outside of Station 13 that makes him an everyday hero.

"2016 we started with our first camp and program that we would offer through the Academy of Life and Learning," Bedell said.

A camp that he and his best friend, Marcus Wright, started to inspire and motivate youth in their community.

From tutoring to football camp, the Academy of Life and Learning has taught many student that failure is not an option -- and with the right mentor success is in your hands.

"Provide that positive atmosphere, positive reinforcement and show them right from wrong, we're hoping we can shoot them in the right direction," Bedell said.
