Man dies after tree falls on house near University of Akron campus

Fire crews located the 33-year-old's body on the top floor of the home.

AKRON, Ohio — Summit County Medical Examiner Gary Guenther confirms a 33-year-old man is dead after a tree fell on a house Wednesday morning in Akron.

According to officials, the Akron Fire Department received the report of a fallen tree just after 10:45 a.m., when storms had made their way through the area. It had landed on a home located on the 400 block of Sumner Street, right by the University of Akron's campus.

"We knew that that tree was coming down one of these days," neighbor Shelby Fortune, whose Ring camera captured the incident, told 3News. "I was just sitting up in my room and the wind started picking up, like a normal thunderstorm would."

The victim's body was found on the top floor of the residence, right underneath the tree. The victim has since been identified as Paul Matvey.

"I feel for him. I know he has a great soul and I'm so sorry to him and his family," Fortune said. "He came out of his house a couple of times when we would feed the stray cats, and he actually gave us some cat food to give to them, which was really nice."

According to Fortune, the tree was supposed to come down a year prior.

"The side that faces our house had actually fallen over into the street last year," she explained. "We were told that it was supposed to get taken care of, but it never did."
