AKRON, Ohio — A Northeast Ohio first responder is receiving recognition after saving the life of a 5-year-old in July.
The City of Akron Fire Department recognized Captain Brad Ager with the EMS Distinguished Service award for going "above and beyond the call of duty" last month.
On Wednesday, July 5, Ager jumped into action on the scene of an accident where a car had struck a tree. When arriving at the scene, Ager found a 5-year-old child lying motionless. The child had a pulse but was not breathing.
"Recognizing the urgent situation, he began providing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation for several minutes until the child began sporadic but spontaneous respirations. Providing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation in the professional setting with no barrier device is an extremely rare occurrence," said City of Akron Fire Department Fire Chief Joseph Natko.
Shortly after giving life-saving CPR, EMS officials came to the scene and continued the lifesaving interventions that were already started and transported the patient to the hospital.
Ager, who also serves as an EMS instructor, has been a member of the Akron Fire Department for over 23 years.
