Man dies in late-night hit-and-run pedestrian crash in Akron

AKRON, Ohio — A 40-year-old man has died after Akron police say he was struck by a hit-and-run vehicle shortly before 11 p.m. Thursday in the 700 block of West Market Street.

Based on the investigation, Akron police say officers determined that before the accident, the pedestrian was on the north side of West Market Street between two buildings.

“Moments later, the victim ran south into the roadway and was struck by a westbound vehicle,” police explained in a press release Friday morning.

The man was taken to an Akron hospital where he later died. His name has not yet been released pending notification of family.

While noting that speed does not appear to be a factor in the incident, Akron police also say the vehicle that struck the man fled the scene.

The incident remains under investigation. No additional details were immediately available.
