AKRON, Ohio — The Akron Police Department has provided additional information about the shooting that took place at a birthday party on Friday evening.
Eight-year-old Mikayla Pickett died after being found with a gunshot wound in the 700 block of Roselle Avenue around 11:48 pm. The department says numerous reports of shots fired came in from around the home before responding.
Several teens were gathered outside the house when the shooting occurred, authorities say. Detectives believe the suspected shooter was outside the home and fired multiple shots.
Police now say that on Saturday morning, a 14-year-old girl, accompanied by her parents, walked into Akron Children’s Hospital with a gunshot wound. She told detectives she was at the birthday party when she was shot in the leg. Her injury is considered minor and non-life threatening.
There have been no arrests made at this time. The investigation is continuing.
