AKRON, Ohio — Three individuals were arrested in Akron after police found guns during a traffic stop on Wednesday night.
Akron police say the incident happened around 10:50 p.m. at the intersection of Copley Road and Diagonal Road when officers conducted a traffic stop for a moving violation.
During the stop, officers discovered that the 22-year-old driver didn't have a valid driver's license and was driving under suspension. When officers searched the vehicle, they recovered two handguns, both with extended magazines and an AR-15-style pistol.
Police say all of the firearms were loaded and accessible to the driver and passengers.
As a result, the driver and an 18-year-old passenger were arrested and charged with weapons-related offenses and taken to the Summit County Jail.
In addition, a 16-year-old passenger was also arrested on a weapons charge and was taken to the Summit County Juvenile Detention Facility.
"This incident highlights the ongoing public safety risk to the community and officers when they encounter individuals unlawfully in possession of or transporting illegal firearms. Despite these challenges, members of the Akron Police Department and our other local and federal law enforcement partners remain committed to reducing gun violence and helping to make the community safer for everyone," said Akron police in a press release.
Akron police also noted that through May, they have recovered 456 firearms using various methods and approaches, including traffic and investigative stops.
