Akron Preparatory School closed Tuesday amid threat: What school officials are saying about the situation

'We are closing school out of an abundance of caution for the safety and security of our students and staff.'

AKRON, Ohio — Classes were canceled Tuesday at Akron Preparatory School amid “threats made to school personnel over the weekend.”

Officials confirmed Tuesday’s school closure in a letter sent to Akron Prep families, which you can read below:

Dear Akron Prep Families,

Following our communication yesterday, we want to update you that school will be closed today, Tuesday 2/20.

This decision pertains to the threats made to school personnel over the weekend. Authorities have not yet reached a conclusion as to the credibility of the threats made. Additionally, due to the holiday schedule, we have not yet received confirmation that police presence is available during throughout the school day today. For these reasons, we are closing school out of an abundance of caution for the safety and security of our students and staff.

We plan to reopen school on Wednesday, 2/21 and will notify you of any further scheduling changes as early as possible.

School officials had previously sent a note about the situation, saying “an allegation about an Akron Preparatory School teacher was made by one of our middle school students that resulted in a police investigation.”

School officials said police conducted their investigation on Friday, which included multiple interviews, involved parties and witnesses.

“Akron police did not find evidence to support the claim and concluded that the allegation was false,” according to the school’s letter. “Members of the reporting family appeared unsatisfied with the results and began threatening school administration, including appearing on a local podcast over the weekend to speculate and threaten administrators.”

The note also said that Akron Prep administrators filed reports to request restraining orders “and are seeking legal counsel on whether and how to press charges on account of slander.”
