AKRON, Ohio — Akron Public Schools students may be staying home from classes for the rest of 2020, but on Monday, the APS Board of Education voted to allow all winter sports to begin. That includes all non-contact and contact sports.
The decision seems to stem from what the board called, "relatively few interruptions of fall sports," due to COVID-19, thanks to strict adherence to public health guidance.
"We urge all of our athletes and families to follow this guidance carefully," Akron Public Schools Superintendent David James said in a press release.
While a start date for the winter season hasn't been announced yet, Athletic Director Joe Vassalotti did note that contact sports, "that's wrestling and basketball, will also include weekly COVID-19 testing."
More information about the district's COVI-19 plans can be found on their website.
