Akron Public Schools inform parents of 'inappropriate social media post' involving teacher

A teacher has been placed on administrative leave pending further investigation, which is standard operating procedure.
A group of independent contracted drivers for Akron Public Schools is asking for a raise, saying the district has hired two additional companies to do the same job.

AKRON, Ohio — 3News is learning about a letter sent from the principal of the Garfield Community Learning Center (CLC) in Akron to school families about "a recent incident involving a staff member" that was posted on social media.

In a statement, Akron Public Schools says it became aware of "an inappropriate social media post" on Sunday.

In response to the post, the district says it has placed the employee on administrative leave, adding that it has also notified "the appropriate authorities," but declined to provide specific details or comment on the identities of those involved "due to the ongoing nature of the investigation."

3News received video of what appears to be a Garfield Community Learning Center (CLC) employee dancing with a female. What is not clear at this point is if the female is a minor or student.

"I am reaching out to inform you of a recent incident involving a staff member that has been brought to our attention through social media," Garfield CLC Principal Kathryn Rodocker wrote in a letter to families. "The district is aware of the situation and immediate action has been taken to begin addressing it. Please be assured that we take such matters very seriously, as the safety and well-being of our students are always our highest priorities. We are committed to maintaining a secure and respectful environment for all members of our school community. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation. We are here to support you and your children."

Akron Public Schools had a similar message in its release.

"Akron Public Schools takes the safety and wellbeing of all students and staff members with the utmost seriousness. We will continue to cooperate fully with investigating authorities," the district added in its release.

A spokesperson with the Akron Police Department says they are working with the APS. “We are aware of a video circulating. We don’t know who the subject is nor do we know her age at this point. It’s under review in totality and we'll be communicating with APS to determine next steps."

Anyone with additional information on this matter is asked to contact Akron Public Schools Chief of Staff Angela Carter at aharper@apslearns.org.
