Akron pushing to demolish the Rubber Bowl

After sitting vacant for years, the City of Akron is now pushing for Akron's Rubber Bowl Stadium to be demolished.

It's not what it once was. Pieces of wood and broken glass fill the memorable stadium, which hosted everything from the Rolling Stones to the Grateful Dead.

It's sat vacant for more than eight years.

"I just don’t see it coming back for anything, the use of it is gone!" Akron City Councilman Bob Hoch.

Hoch said it's become a terrible eye sore. "I think we need to close up the Rubber Bowl. We’ve got a lot of nice pictures and memories and go from there," Hoch said.

The stadium's owners, Team 1 Marketing, said they still have dreams for the stadium. They bought the venue in 2012 and had talked about bringing everything from Pro-football, concerts and even adding a dome.

Hoch said although the company has good intentions, the plans never came to light.

"Everything fell off , and the only thing that happened was that they had sales out here and sold off some items as memorabilia, and the rest they sold off as scrap," Hoch said.

Fences surround the stadium, but they're not maintained, allowing vandalism to take place. It's turned the old stadium into a danger zone.

"It’s a concern about safety because the people are coming in. Something is going to happen, and someone is going to get hurt," Hoch said.

WKYC Channel 3's Jasmine Monroe spoke to Sean Mason, of Team 1, said that his dream is in the making.
