AKRON, Ohio — An investigation is underway after three people were shot and one was trampled following an incident at a "gathering" Wednesday evening in Akron.
Akron police say the shooting happened just before 10 p.m. in the 700 block of Clifford Avenue.
Upon arriving at the scene, Akron police found a 53-year-old man in the parking lot with a gunshot wound to the leg. The victim was taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center.
While investigating, officers were notified that three other victims self-transported themselves to Summa Health Akron City Hospital.
Police say that a 19-year-old woman and a 45-year-old woman also sustained gunshot wounds.
All of the victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
A 43-year-old woman was also injured after being trampled by members of the crowd when shots were fired.
According to Akron police, the exact circumstances surrounding the shooting are unknown. However, investigators discovered that the incident happened at a gathering when an altercation erupted, and an unknown suspect fired shots.
3News' Kaitor Kay spoke with Captain Michael Miller, the press information officer for the Akron Police Department, about the Wednesday night shooting.
“Well, it has some of the echoes or remnants of the incident we had back in June, unfortunately, where there was a gathering and so forth there on Kelly Avenue," he said. "What we make of it is that young people are still making poor decisions, unfortunately. You know, conflicts are being resolved or responded to with violence and/or the use of guns to solve conflicts."
Kay then asked for an update on that mass shooting on June 2 that left one dead and 28 others injured.
“So, we have no known updates on the shooting in June," Miller said. "We do know that we have over 3,000 hours of investigative time into that incident. We, as you may know, partner with multiple agencies, local and federal partners in this investigation. This was very nuanced from the beginning. A lot of people, a lot of evidence, a lot of unknowns. And so right now there are no known suspects, but that is an open investigation that we're still committed to solve. We are committed to solve any crime, especially any violent crime, the one in June and the incident last night.”
