Woman hit by stray bullet in Akron shooting after ‘altercation erupted’

Police say the victim was shot in the leg during the incident in the 500 block of Crosby Street.

AKRON, Ohio — A 43-year-old woman was hurt with a gunshot wound to the leg, but Akron police say she was not believed to be the intended target and was struck by a stray bullet.

It happened around 8:35 p.m. Thursday in the 500 block of Crosby Street.

“Based on preliminary information, investigators learned there was a gathering behind a residence on Crosby Street,” according to a press release. “A short time later, an altercation erupted resulting in an exchange of gunfire.”

Officers administered first aid at the scene before the victim was taken to the hospital by EMS. Her injury is not believed to be life-threatening.

Police recovered “numerous shell casings” at the scene.

No suspects have been identified.
