AKRON, Ohio — An investigation is underway after a deadly shooting in Akron.
Akron police say they responded to the 800 block of East Wilbeth Road on Friday night at around 11:24 p.m.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers found a 47-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the torso. Officers administered first aid until EMS arrived and transported the victim to Summa Health System in Akron, where he later died.
Akron police arrested a 16-year-old boy in connection to the fatal shooting at around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday in the 1000 block of South Arlington Street.
Police say they recovered a handgun and other evidence from the home. The teen, who was charged with felonious assault, was transported to the Summit County Juvenile Detention Facility.
According to an initial investigation, the victim was allegedly shot in the 1300 block of South Arlington Street and was dropped off at East Wilbeth Road shortly after being shot.
Akron police determined that the teen allegedly shot the victim during an altercation.
“I thank the detectives for their quick work in this case,” said Mayor Shammas Malik. “This case is particularly heartbreaking knowing the age of the suspect and the fact that an altercation escalated to a man losing his life. The availability of guns to our young people and the lack of judgement are major factors contributing to violent crime and we will continue to address both as we work to make our community safer.”
