AKRON, Ohio — A 32-year-old man is dead following an overnight Akron shooting in the 100 block of East Wilbeth Road.
The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office says it was around 12:05 a.m. Thursday when Akron police officers responded to the scene and found the victim inside a residence with multiple gunshot wounds.
The victim, identified as Darnell E. McGrady, was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:45 a.m.
"Based on preliminary information, officers determined that the victim was at the residence with the suspect and at least one other male," according to Akron police. "At some point during the encounter, the suspect shot the victim, and the subjects fled the scene in the victim’s car. The vehicle was later tracked to a home in the 1000 block of Silvercrest Avenue."
ATTACK ON SILVERCREST AVENUE
Once on Silvercrest, Akron police say the suspect forced his way inside a residence where he allegedly assaulted a 65-year-old woman by punching her several times before taking an undisclosed amount of money.
"The suspect was known to the victim," police say.
The woman was taken to the hospital in Barberton where she is being treated for her injuries, which police say are not considered life-threatening.
TRACKING THE SUSPECT WITH ONSTAR
After the Silvercrest incident, police say the suspect left the scene and was tracked by OnStar to an address in the 500 block of Storer Avenue where he allegedly barricaded himself.
Moments later, police say three people -- ages 47, 20 and 1 -- "were escorted out of the house, leaving the shooting suspect inside."
SWAT responded to the scene and ordered the suspect out of the house.
The suspect -- identified as 28-year-old Byron Johnson -- was taken into custody after allegedly first attempting to climb out of a window.
Johnson was charged with murder in connection with the shooting. Akron police say he's also been charged with aggravated burglary, felonious assault and motor vehicle theft connected to the alleged crimes that took place on Silvercrest Avenue.
He was then booked in the Summit County Jail.
"Detectives are working to determine what role, if any, the 20-year-old male played in either incident," according to Akron police. "The investigation is ongoing."
