AKRON, Ohio — A 14-year-old boy was arrested Saturday in Akron after allegedly shooting a gun into the air during an altercation near the Erie Island ball field in the 1500 block of Peckham Street.

Akron police say it was just before 5 p.m. when a uniformed officer who was providing security at a pee-wee football game called for backup after hearing multiple shots.

“As the officer rushed in the direction of the gunfire, bystanders scattered,” according to Akron police.

Police say one of the pee-wee football coaches helped the officer as he chased the suspect on foot.

The teen was captured about a block away and taken into custody without further incident.

He has been charged with carrying a concealed weapon, inducing panic and weapons under disability.

Police say a handgun and other evidence was recovered.

Nobody was hurt.
