AKRON, Ohio — Two teens were arrested following a traffic stop at East Archwood Avenue and Lily Street in Akron.

Police say the situation started around 6 p.m. when the traffic stop was initiated for “traffic and equipment violations.”

While the 16-year-old driver was cited for allegedly driving without a valid license, Akron police say a 17-year-old boy who was the front-seat passenger “exited the car and attempted to flee.”

“The teen was taken into custody after a brief struggle where he reportedly struck a police officer,” according to a press release from Akron police. “During a search incident to arrest, the teen was found with a loaded handgun. Also recovered was over 19 grams of suspected fentanyl.”

Police say the 17-year-old was charged with carrying concealed weapons, improper handling of firearms inside a motor vehicle, obstructing official business, assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, trafficking in drugs, possession of a fentanyl related compound and criminal damaging.

Akron police also note that a 16-year-old boy was detained after getting out of the back seat.

“Officers found a loaded handgun with a 50-round magazine inside the backpack next to where the teen was sitting,” according to the press release from Akron police. “He was arrested and charged with carrying concealed weapons and improper handling of firearms inside a motor vehicle.”
