AKRON, Ohio — An Akron Zoo employee is recovering after being attacked by a Komodo dragon.
Akron Zoo officials say the incident happened on Sunday, March 3 in the Komodo Kingdom employee service area.
Initial investigations reveal that most of the employee's injuries came as a result of a bite wound that was inflicted by a Komodo dragon.
"Our chief concern is for our valued team member, who is currently recovering at home. We will update as more information is available, consistent with privacy requirements and Federal law. We also want to honor our employee’s privacy, so we are providing no other details at this time," said Akron Zoo officials in a press release.
Additionally, a Komodo dragon not involved in a staff member's injuries was also injured but is in stable condition and is recovering.
Akron Zoo provided the following update on March 19:
"The Occupational Safety and Health Administration conducted an investigation beginning on March 4, 2024, and has now determined that there were no employer violations of safety standards by the Akron Zoo," according to a press release.
