Akron’s tunnel boring machine 'Rosie' expected to complete her mile-long journey

The giant tunnel drill came to Akron earlier this summer to update the city's sewer system.

AKRON, Ohio -- Big news out of Akron…

“Rosie” -- the gigantic tunnel boring machine burrowing under downtown Akron -- is expected to complete its 6,240-foot journey Wednesday.

The giant tunnel drill came to Akron earlier this summer to update the city's sewer system.

To celebrate the end of her work, the city will host a party at Lock 3 at noon.Wednesday.

The event will feature a live stream of Rosie’s breakthrough moment, along with merchandise sales, special giveaways, a sample concrete segment from the tunnel and the re-release of Rosie Digs Akron, a lager produced by Thirsty Dog Brewing Co. There also will be a selfie station allowing people to take their photo “inside the tunnel.”

Rosie is 300 feet long and weighs 2.2 million pounds.

She’s been grinding up soil, shale and bedrock under Akron for the city's billion dollar sewer separation project.

The tunnel she will leave behind is more than 6,200 feet long and can hold 25.6 million gallons of storm sewer overflow, keeping it out of the Cuyahoga River.
