AKRON, Ohio — The City of Akron has announced its plans to celebrate Buchtel and Archbishop Hoban High School after their boys basketball teams won state titles over the weekend in their respective divisions.
The Buchtel and Archbishop Hoban Celebration Parade will take place on Sunday, March 26, at 2 p.m.
The celebration of Akron's student-athletes will begin on Main Street starting at Cedar Street and ending at Bowery Street.
The announcement came during Mayor Dan Horrigan's final State of the City address on Wednesday morning.
"Congratulations to both teams, the coaches, staff, parents, cheerleaders, everyone that was part of that great contingent from Akron that went down. That is a huge endeavor that they both did. The city is very proud, and I know I am," said Horrigan.
Archbishop Hoban's title came after the Knights defeated Pickerington Central 53-47 in the OHSAA Division I boys basketball championship. Sunday night's championship victory marked the team's first title in 34 years.
Buchtel won its first-ever OHSAA boys basketball championship after defeating Lutheran West 51-49 in the Division II contest.
The Griffins also became the first Akron Public Schools team to win a boys basketball championship since 1986.
"We are bringing a lot of state championships back to Akron. I could not be more proud of both schools," said Horrigan.
