19-year-old man dies in motorcycle crash involving Toyota in Akron: Here's what police are saying

Akron police say it was around 10:20 p.m. Sunday night when the crash happened in the area of South Hawkins and Edgemoor avenues.

AKRON, Ohio — A 19-year-old man is dead following a crash in Akron late Sunday night involving a Yamaha motorcycle and Toyota Sienna.

Akron police say it was around 10:20 p.m. when the motorcycle was traveling southbound on South Hawkins Avenue as the Toyota -- traveling eastbound on Edgemoor Avenue -- made a northbound turn onto South Hawkins Avenue “into the path of the Yamaha, causing the motorcycle to strike the van.”

The motorcycle’s driver was ejected and taken to the hospital where police say he later died.

His name is not being released at this time.

Police say the driver of the Toyota -- identified as a 50-year-old woman -- also had a 15-year-old passenger in the vehicle. Neither were hurt in the crash.

“It is unknown if speed was a factor in the crash,” according to a press release from Akron police. “Alcohol was determined NOT to be a contributing factor. The incident remains under investigation.”

No additional details were immediately available.
