The Akron Civic Theatre is canceling an anticipated performance due to a confirmed case of COVID-19 within the facility.
On Tuesday morning, officials released the following statement regarding the cancelation of Tuesday night's "Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Miracle" performance.
"After careful consideration for the health and safety of our cast, crew, and ticket holders, we have made the difficult decision to cancel tonight's performance of The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Musical at the Akron Civic Theatre in Akron, Ohio. This decision follows a positive COVID test result among our crew and is being done out of an abundance of caution and for the safety of all involved," the statement reads.
According to officials, all ticket holders will be refunded for the cost of the tickets.
"We are grateful to all of those that included this show as part of their family’s holiday celebration this year and sincerely regret any inconvenience that this cancellation causes," the statement continues.
The cancellation comes as COVID-19 cases surge around the country, including in Northeast Ohio. On Monday, the Ohio Department of Health reported more than 10,000 new cases of COVID-19 within a 24 hour period.
Earlier this week, U.S. health officials declared that an estimated 73 percent of new coronavirus cases can be attributed to omicron, the variant first discovered just weeks ago in south Africa.
