AKRON, Ohio — Police used pepper spray “to gain control and disperse the crowd” after a fight allegedly broke out after Friday night’s high school football game between Ellet and Firestone in Akron on Oct. 14.
Police say the fight involved players, students and spectators near one of the locker rooms.
Uniformed officers who were at the game providing security separated those involved, according to details released Monday, Oct. 17, by the Akron Police Department. Additional officers were called to the scene, but police say the crowd had already dispersed when they arrived.
On Thursday, Oct. 27, the Akron Police Department provided an update that three students from each school were directly involved in the altercation.
All six of the students have been charged due to their roles in the incident. Three of the individuals were student-athletes, but Akron Police are unsure if they played in the football game.
“Based on preliminary information, players and students exchanged insults and taunted one another in the moments leading up to the altercation,” police said.
Akron Public Schools provided the following statement about the incident to 3News:
"Akron Public Schools strongly condemns the abhorrent and unacceptable behavior. The district will pursue disciplinary actions against any individuals who are found to have participated in this large altercation. We continue working to bring communities together in upholding safe and respectful environments for students and families."
