Will Akron's 'Tent City' stay or go?
A hot debate took place at Monday's city council meeting. The council held a public hearing on whether tents for the homeless should be allowed on private property on Broad Street.
The owner started with a handful of tents on his property last year. It's now grown to 44 tents.
The city of Akron has gotten complaints from neighbors about the smell, noise, and trash. Fire inspectors have cited safety hazards as well.
Supporters are asking to work with city leaders to find a solution.
"I am doing what I can as an American for American citizens," Tent City owner Sage Lewis told council in an emotional speech. "That's what I want us all to do. Come up with solutions. Make this work! Be creative! Be Akron!"
After the hearing, council members chose to take more time to reach a decision. There's no word on when that will happen.
