House in Akron's Highland Square partially collapses after catching fire

The homeowner was injured and taken to a local hospital, but walked out to the front porch on his own and is said to be 'doing fine.'

AKRON, Ohio — Authorities are investigating following a house fire in Akron Monday morning that led to a partial collapse of the structure.

Akron Fire Lt. Tim Morrison says firefighters were called to the 100 block of Edgerton Road around 10:30 a.m. and found smoke and flames coming out of three sides of the building. The homeowner was injured and taken to a local hospital, but walked out to the front porch on his own.

As the fire continued to burn, parts of the building collapsed throughout the day, although Morrison says it "wasn't one initial thing" that caused the structure failure. Surrounding homes suffered minor damage such as cracked windows, and Dominion Energy is currently checking gas lines.

The homeowner's brother reported the victim was "doing fine" after the fire. No one else was hurt.

The Akron Fire Department is currently investigating the incident.
