Man dies in late-night Akron shooting near homeless encampment

AKRON, Ohio — A 48-year-old man has died following a late-night shooting in Akron on Thursday.

The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office says authorities responded to the scene in the 80 block of Kent Place shortly before 11 p.m.

“When officers arrived on scene the victim was discovered in a parking lot near a homeless encampment with a gunshot wound to the chest,” according to a press release from the Summit County Medical Examiner.

The victim -- who has been identified as Hermaine Powell of Akron -- was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:19 p.m.

"The exact circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting are unknown," according to the Akron Police Department.

Police say at least one shell casing "and other evidence" were recovered nearby.

No additional details were immediately available, but stay with 3News as we will update this article if more information is released.
