AKRON, Ohio — Hours after Akron Police publicly identified the suspect in the July killing of 34-year-old Toni Westover, officers arrested the suspect following a SWAT standoff.
According to Police, detectives received information around 8:55 p.m. on Wednesday regarding the whereabouts of 31-year-old Quinton Nixon that prompted them to respond to a residence in the 500 block of Gridley Avenue. The SWAT team was called and made aware that Nixon was inside the house.
After officers observed Nixon through the window, he refused attempts to convince him to surrender. Officers proceeded to enter the house, where they found him hiding in the attic.
Following an hours-long standoff, Nixon was taken into custody without incident. An AR-15 rifle and shotgun were recovered at the residence.
Following his arrest, Nixon was taken to the police station for questioning and later transported to the Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center to treat a minor injury. Around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, he was was released from the hospital and taken to the Summit County Jail and booked on murder charges
Westover was fatally shot around 2:20 a.m. on Monday, July 25, in the 2200 block of Maryland Avenue. Upon their arrival, officers found Westover with a gunshot wound, according to the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office.
She was taken to an Akron hospital where she later died at 2:45 p.m.
