Newborn 'mono mono' twins holding hands goes viral

AKRON -- Newborn twin girls in Akron are defying the odds and capturing hearts around the world.

A picture of them holding hands at birth is going viral.

Doctors at Akron Children's Hospital took the picture just moments after the girls were born.

It's a happy ending to a complicated pregnancy.

For one of the first times, Bill and Sarah Thistlewaite are holding their new born twin girls.

Little Jenna is only 3 lbs and 11 ounces.

Her twin, Jillian -- 3 lbs 14 ounces.

"It's amazing. I've been waiting. I got to hold Jenna the other day but to actually hold her like this is, I've been waiting since Friday to do it," said Bill.

"We made it through. It's just an overwhelming feeling," said Sarah.

Jenna and Jillian are tiny miracles who have captured the hearts of millions around the world when they grabbed each others' hand just moments after they were born.

"I never thought that it was going to blow up into something like this. One of my friends lives in Australia and she texted me last night and said I was on her Australian news," giggled Sarah.

Born at 33 weeks, the girls have defied the odds of a condition called mono, mono - meaning they shared an amniotic sac and placenta.

It's dangerous and very rare type of pregnancy with a low survival rate.

It only happens in one out of 10,000 pregnancies.

"Sometimes you end up with one baby with mono, mono. So for them to be here, two of them, to be healthy, that is a miracle," said Neonatologist Mohammed Elkhwad with Akron Children's Hospital.

A miracle that the Thistlethwaite's credit to faith.

"A lot of faith and praying and there is nothing you can do other than a strong faith in God and praying he is going to get us through it," said Sarah.

The girls are almost breathing on their own.

They will likely go home in about three weeks.
