Off-duty Akron police officer catches burglary suspect in the act

The off-duty officer heard the alarm and was able to catch the suspect while he attempted to flee the home.

The Akron Police Department is heralding an off-duty officer today who caught a burglary suspect in the act early Tuesday morning. 

According to officials, the incident began around 3:30 a.m. this morning when a homeowner in the 700 block of Ecton Road reported someone attempting to break into his home.

An off-duty officer who heard the alarms investigated and found the suspect, 56-year-old Richard Curley, attempting to flee the scene. The officer chased the suspect and was able to catch him and hold on to him until other officials arrived on the scene. 

Curley's vehicle was later searched and impounded by officers. Police say the 56-year-old is a person of interest in a string of area burglaries and other crimes. 

Akron police officials say this incident remains under investigation.
