One dead, one wounded in Akron shooting near Firestone Community Learning Center

The fatal shooting victim has been identified as 20-year-old Javonte Mills

AKRON, Ohio — Akron police are investigating a deadly shooting that happened around 9 p.m. Sunday evening on North Hawkins Avenue near the Firestone Community Learning Center.

When police arrived at the scene, they found 20-year-old Javonte Mills dead and a 17-year-old male wounded. The teen was taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. 

Officers say the shooting was proceeded by a fight that started between two people, then escalated as others became involved. Shots were fired into the crowd by unknown suspects. 

The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office conducted an autopsy on Mills and determined that he died of a gunshot wound to the chest.
