Police 'confident' of safety before thousands gather for Akron Marathon

Thousands are expected to gather in Akron for the race, months after the early June mass shooting in which more than two dozen people were injured.

AKRON, Ohio — Ahead of the Akron Marathon on Saturday, Sept. 28, an Akron Police Department official told 3News the department is "confident the marathon will be safe."

This follows the early June mass shooting in which one person was killed and more than two dozen people were injured. While police still have not caught the people involved in the shooting, the official said there are “no risks to the public.”

Some runners we spoke say they feel the race will be safe, adding that they more concerned about the potential for rain.

"If that happens, I might have to reevaluate a little bit," runner Stacy Selby said.

Race administrators estimate thousands of people will be in the Akron area for the race.

"It's always an early morning, but a good morning," runner Justin Edwards said. "From a safety standpoint, there's police officers everywhere, and they always do a great job of directing traffic and blocking off the streets."
