SWAT stand-off in Akron ends peacefully Saturday morning; suspect in custody

Police say the suspect was making statements that he wanted to harm himself and refused to put down the weapon when officers asked.

AKRON, Ohio — One man is in custody after what authorities call an “extremely tense and rapidly evolving situation” early Saturday morning.

Akron police say Gino Suggs, 29, was arrested without incident after a standoff that lasted several hours.

Officers were initially called to the 500 block of Douglas Avenue around 12:45 a.m. for an alleged domestic fight between Suggs and a female victim. When they arrived, Suggs had left the home but was later seen walking near Vernon Odom Boulevard and Rand Avenue. Suggs apparently had a gun and pointed it to his head several times before ending up in the backyard of a home on Douglas Street.

Suggs was making statements that he wanted to harm himself and refused to put down the weapon when officers asked him, police claim. SWAT was called to the scene and officers were able to get him to surrender peacefully just after 5:30 a.m.

Suggs was charged with domestic violence, aggravated menacing, obstructing official business and two weapons related offenses. He is currently in the Summit County Jail.
