NEW FRANKLIN, Ohio — The New Franklin Fire Department says it responded to reports of a man in the water on Turkeyfoot Lake Sunday just after 5 p.m. Rescuers say the initial caller reported the victim went into the water between Whyem Drive and Latham Lane. They could see the man's head bobbing in the water.
The man had been riding an ATV when he went through the ice. The New Franklin Fire Department says its rescue workers arrived within five minutes of the first call being placed. They suited up in cold water exposure suits and worked to keep the man's head above the water until he could be pulled out.
Four other departments, including Coventry Township and the City of Green, arrived on scene a short time later. Those crews also assisted firefighters from New Franklin in the rescue. Fire personnel from the Villages of Lakemore and Clinton also helped out at the scene.
The man suffered from hypothermia. He was treated and taken to a nearby hospital. There is no word on his condition at this time.
The New Franklin Fire Department wants to remind everyone that no ice is 100% safe ice. The department says if you do go out on to the ice for whatever reason, you should never go alone. Use the buddy system. Also, if you break through the ice, hypothermia can cause a loss of motor skills within a matter of minutes. Make sure you and those you're with are wearing personal floatation devices at all times.
