AKRON, Ohio — The University of Akron has made a game-changing announcement regarding the future of online gaming at their school.
UA has joined the Mid-American Conference (MAC) for esports, which aims to "facilitate and foster high-quality gaming competition among collegiate esports teams."
"The University of Akron led our region in the establishment of varsity esports, our efforts resulted in Akron Esports student-gamers and their coaches bringing home to Akron multiple national esports championships," said UA President Gary L. Miller, "The University is proud to continue its leadership role in this new and evolving form of collegiate competition by becoming an initial member of the newly formed Esports Collegiate Conference."
The other teams included in the MAC esports tournament include schools like Bowling Green University, Central and Eastern Michigan Universities, Kent State University and Ohio University.
Currently, officials say the games in the spring esports challenges include Overwatch and League of Legends, while the fall season is eyeing games like Fortnite, Super Smash Brothers, or FIFA.
The UA team will officially launch its partnership with Esports Collegiate in the 2020-21 season.
