AKRON — U.S. Marshals have captured the suspect wanted for the shooting death of a 4-year-old girl in Akron on Saturday afternoon.
31-year-old Darnell Bitting was tracked down at a Corley St. home in Akron. The Akron Narcotics Unit and the Akron Police Department Street Narcotics Uniform Detail were with Marshals for the arrest. He will be booked into the Summit County Jail.
Authorities checked several locations during their search for Bitting. In a vehicle belonging to an associate of Bitting, Marshals said they found over a dozen guns, body armor and a hand grenade.
It is not known if any of the recovered firearms are responsible for the death of the child.
The shooting happened on Friday at a house in the 900 block of Mercer Avenue. A woman pulled up to the home with her mother and four children in the car to retrieve some property inside. When no one answered the door, she broke out several windows.
Police say Bitting came out of the house with a rifle and fired a shot that struck the car, hitting the 4-year-old. She was taken to Akron Children's Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her name is being withheld pending positive identification and family notification. The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy.
The grandmother and three other children, ages 7, 6, and 3, were not hurt.
Warrants for murder and weapons under disability have been issued for Bitting, who was considered armed and dangerous. He stands 6'3" and weighs 240 pounds.
