Ashtabula County house deemed 'total loss' after fire, multiple firefighters injured

The family and their four dogs were able to escape from the blaze unhurt.

CONNEAUT, Ohio — An Ashtabula County family is recovering from a house fire that left their home destroyed and multiple firefighters injured. This took place late Friday night in Conneaut.

Conneaut Fire Department was alerted around 11 p.m. that night to respond to the 300 block of Monroe St.

Amanda Blevins told 3News that she, her husband, and her daughter had just finished watching a movie, when they heard banging on their front door. It was someone desperately telling them to get out of their house because it was on fire.

The family and their four dogs escaped quickly.

But shortly afterwards, three responding firefighters got trapped by the flames upstairs, and had to jump out of a second story window to safety.

Conneaut Fire reported that one of the firefighters that jumped out of the window fractured his leg, another sprained his ankle, and the third one is doing OK and has returned to work.

Blevins said the house is a total loss, and unfortunately, they did not have renter's insurance. Devastated, Blevins said her family may have to live out of their camper for the time being.

"We're just hoping and praying that it's okay enough that we'll really be able to live in it for a little while because we're just hanging at my sister's house right now, but we also have four dogs that we have to take care of so we're just hoping that it's okay enough for us to live in for a little while I guess," she said through tears.

Conneaut Fire's chief told 3News the cause of the fire is unknown, only saying that it started outside on the first floor, and that the state fire marshal is investigating.

"They were all great," Blevins said of the service of the firefighters. "So grateful."

A GoFundMe called "Rebuild Hope for Amanda & Chris Blevins" has been started for the family's recovery.
