Big Walnut student seriously injured during homecoming parade

Ohio State Highway Patrol said the 11-year-old boy was struck around 6:50 p.m. by a float during the parade on North Miller Drive in Sunbury.

SUNBURY, Ohio — A Big Walnut Local Schools student was seriously injured during the district's homecoming parade Friday.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said the 11-year-old boy was struck around 6:50 p.m. by a float during the parade on North Miller Drive in Sunbury.

The family confirmed to 10TV that the boy's name is Kenneth, but goes by Kenny.

Kenny was walking parallel with a Ford F350, which was hauling a float on a trailer. He fell and was struck by the tires on the trailer, OSHP said.

Following the incident, he was taken to Nationwide Children's Hospital in critical condition. There has been no update on his condition since the incident.

Kenny's aunt said he went into surgery for an aneurysm. He also has a lacerated liver, collapsed lung and several broken ribs and several facial bone fractures.

"I want to thank our staff, students, and community members who were on the scene and assisted when the event happened, as well as the Delaware County EMS, BST&G Fire Department, the Sunbury Police Department, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol," Big Walnut Superintendent Ryan McLane said in a written statement on Saturday.

McLane left a voicemail for district families that asked them to send "positive vibes" to Kenny and his family.

Alcohol is not considered a factor in the incident and the crash remains under investigation.

The school will have counselors available on Monday to provide students and staff with support, according to McLane.

Family members have started a GoFundMe page to raise money for Kenny's medical costs. The family has raised more than $60,000, surpassing the initial goal of $1,000.
