VERMILION, Ohio — Two fishermen are recovering after being rescued from Lake Erie on Tuesday afternoon.
The rescue happened shortly after 2 p.m. when Vermilion police learned of a capsized boat nearly one mile off the shore of the Vermilion Shores Condos on Lake Erie.
According to police, the 15-foot capsized fishing boat was able to signal for help from another boat nearby. The nearby boat assisted, pulling two males out of the water, including one who was having a medical emergency. The fishermen were brought back to the Vermilion River Port, where one was treated by first responders and taken to the hospital.
Officials say the boat capsized after it "began taking on water from the sudden increase in waves height and a non-functioning bilge pump."
After confirming that everyone was accounted for, the Vermilion Police Department, MPU and Tow Boat U.S. located the capsized boat and towed it back to Lorain.
"This is a great example of many different agencies and the public working together during an emergency towards a positive outcome. The assisting boaters, VPD Dispatch, VPD Road Patrol, VPD MPU, VFD, Life Care, Tow Boat US and the USCG all played their part during this emergency," said the Vermilion Police Department in a Facebook post.
