CANTON, Ohio — A family of seven people was displaced following a fire at a home in Canton on Tuesday evening.
According to a release from Canton Fire Division Chief Steve Henderson, crews were called to a home in the 1400 block of Struble Avenue NE at approximately 6:38 p.m. for a report of an air conditioner on fire.
When firefighters arrived, they discovered smoke and fire on the exterior of the house. Inside the residence, crews dealt with heavy smoke and fire in the second floor bedrooms, but were able to quickly put out the blaze.
According to Henderson, the occupants of the house were alerted to the fire on the second floor by smoke detectors and were able to evacuate the residence. A neighbor who assisted the family out of the house suffered a non-life-threatening injury and was taken to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital.
In addition, one firefighter sustained a minor injury but was able to remain on duty.
The Red Cross was called to assist the two adults and five children who were displaced as a result of the fire. Canton fire officials estimate the damage to the home at $23,000 for its structure and contents.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
