35-year-old man killed in Canton shooting, suspect arrested

CANTON, Ohio — An 18-year-old man is in custody following a fatal shooting in Canton on Friday night.

Canton police say the shooting happened at around 10:31 p.m. on Maple Avenue Northeast. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found a man inside a home with a gunshot wound to his upper body. 

Officers aided the victim until EMS arrived. EMS transported the victim, who has since been identified as 37-year-old Dontae Crayton of Canton, to Cleveland Clinic Mery Hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries. 

Police say they arrested 18-year-old Savier Smiley at a nearby residence shortly after the shooting. Smiley is being charged with murder. 

At this time, Canton police are continuing to investigate the shooting.
