CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Division of Police added 37 new officers on Friday as Mayor Frank Jackson swore in the graduates of the 141st Cleveland Police Academy.
The new officers will be assigned to neighborhood districts on basic patrol. One class member, away on military leave, will be sworn in at a later time, bringing the total number of new officers to 38.

The recruits were selected following a Civil Service exam administered for the patrol officer position. Candidates underwent several tests and a comprehensive background check before being offered conditional employment. They were given more than 1,100 hours of instruction in police tactics, criminal law, community diversity and crisis intervention training.
This was the first Cleveland Police Academy class to train within the Cuyahoga Community College Police Academy at Tri-C’s Public Safety Training Center.
“Public service is an honorable profession but it’s not for everybody. I am pleased to welcome these new officers to the Division of Police,” said Mayor Jackson. “In taking their oath, these 38 patrol officers are fulfilling my commitment to providing a better quality of life for all Clevelanders.”
“These men and women have worked very hard to get to this day. I thank them for their willingness to serve,” added Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams. “I’d also like to remind the public that we are actively recruiting and actively hiring more officers.”
