U.S. Coast Guard officials confirm two different bodies were recovered from Lake Erie Saturday.
The first body was recovered about 10 miles off shore from Wilwood Park in Cleveland sometime during the late morning or early afternoon. The ODNR did confirm the victim is male, but neither his identity nor manner of death is known at this time. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office is conducting an autopsy.
Then around noon, crews in Vermilion suspended a search for a fisherman who had gone missing Friday evening after a body matching his description was found near the mouth of the Vermilion River. His abandoned boat had turned up last night, and he was apparently not wearing a life jacket.
Nearly 30 people have died in Lake Erie already this year, the most among the five great lakes. The Coast Guard also suspended a search last week for 46-year-old Robert Allan of Mentor, after he jumped off a boat to go for a swim. It is unknown of the discovery of the first body is related to that search.
