Cleveland Police Chief Calvin D. Williams recently retired after 32 years of service with the division, but apparently his absence from the force didn't last long.
According to the city, Williams officially retired this past Wednesday, only to be re-hired and sworn in by Mayor Frank G. Jackson two days later on Friday. The odd announcement was made in a news release sent to local news organizations around 5:30 p.m., and this technically means Williams is no longer an official police officer despite being Cleveland's "top cop."
While the city did not say why Williams, who first came to the Cleveland Division of Police since 1986 and became chief in 2014, retired before being re-hired, the practice will allow him to collect a retirement pension while at the same time being paid his salary as chief. Known as "double dipping," it is somewhat controversial, but legal.
