Case Western Reserve University: Armed suspect 'no longer in the area'

CWRU says it will have an increased police presence on Monday evening and buildings will remain card-access only.

CLEVELAND — After sending multiple alerts on Monday afternoon, Case Western Reserve University says an armed suspect is no longer on campus.

CWRU sent out the following post on social media at 6:30 p.m.: "After multiple police departments investigated areas on and surrounding campus, they believe the suspect is no longer in the area. CWRU will have an increased police presence this evening. Buildings will remain card-access only tonight."

The first alert was sent out at 4:54 p.m., stating at an emergency had been reported and police were investigating. 

Ten minutes later, CWRU stated that an armed man was last seen on Euclid Avenue near University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. The man has been described as wearing a green hoodie and blue jeans.

Students and staff were being told to "stay alert and in place." Entrance to buildings has also been restricted only to those with special key cards and people are being asked to avoid the area and "stay in a safe place."
