CLEVELAND — The 5-year-old Cleveland girl who died after being taken to the hospital this week was starving and had "several" injuries, according to a report from the Cuyahoga County Division of Children and Family Services.
March 26 Update: The girl has been identified as Kamryn Riley.
In a signed statement obtained by 3News, a social worker said doctors at UH Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital determined the young victim to be malnourished. The child later died from her injuries, which at this time have been redacted from the documents.
Additionally, officials claimed the girl's home on Forest Avenue was in "deplorable and unsanitary conditions." Among other things, feces were spread on the ceiling and walls, kids' beds were left dirty and soiled, and bugs were flying around inside along with a noticeable bed bug infestation.
Authorities determined the mother and owner of the house suffers from unspecified mental health issues "which she is not properly addressing." Due to this as well as the unsafe conditions, CFS employees removed three other children from her care. The county says the siblings are currently "safe" with another family member.
At this time, the Cleveland Division of Police is investigating the little girl's death as a case of abuse and neglect. Since no criminal charges have yet been filed, WKYC is currently not identifying either the mother or the victim.
The Cuyahoga County medical examiner is currently conducting an autopsy to determine just how the 5-year-old girl died.
