CLEVELAND — Shoppers who visit Cleveland's West Side Market may find a more comfortable experience after recent troubles with its exhaust system caused excessive heat in the iconic building.
The problem was first pointed out on social media earlier this week as vendor Kate's Fish at the West Side Market posted the following on Facebook:
Among those who commented on the post was Ward 3 Councilman Kerry McCormick
On Friday, the city of Cleveland put out a statement with the following points:
- The market –built in 1912 – has never had, nor does it currently maintain a heating or air conditioning system. Instead the roof-top exhaust assists with air circulation.
- City inspectors visited the market Thursday to assess the system and will return Friday to continue assessments and begin repairs.
- The City is adjusting its internal process to electronically track needed repairs and has begun an assessment of all capital systems.
The City of Cleveland also pointed out that they have spent $5.3 million dollars on capital repairs to the West Side Market over the past five years. Those repairs include a new parking lot, new electrical systems, new boilers, and roof repairs.
