City of Cleveland seeking candidates for 'Civilian Police Review Board'

Submit a resume with work history and a cover letter to Ryan Puente, Chief Government Affairs Officer, at rpuente@clevelandohio.com to apply. Deadline is August 26.

CLEVELAND — Editor's note: The video above is from a previous story about the new Cleveland police chief Wayne Drummond.

The City of Cleveland is looking to form a "Civilian Police Review Board" aiming to have public servants review the conduct of Division of Police employees. In forming this review board, they are looking for qualified candidates who would serve on the board.

Requirements: Persons applying to fill a position on the CPRB cannot be employed currently as a law enforcement officer and cannot be a current or former employee of the Cleveland Division of Police. Also, such persons cannot be a current employed by the City of Cleveland or by any public agency having a connection with the City of Cleveland, including county agencies and community development corporation.

The candidates for these positions must be residents of the City of Cleveland at the time of appointment. If selected, applicants will be appointed to one of two terms:

  • One position’s term lasts from December 21, 2021, to December 20, 2025. The individual appointed to this term would also be eligible to apply for the new full four-year term that would begin December 21, 2025.
  • Two positions’ terms last from August 9, 2022, to August 8, 2026.

"The Civilian Police Review Board (CPRB) has the power to receive, cause investigation of, and recommend resolution of non-criminal complaints filed with it alleging misconduct by officers and non-sworn employees of the Cleveland Division of Police when such alleged misconduct is directed toward any person who is not a CDP employee."

Voters established the civilian review board with the passage of Issue 24 last November. The measure had the support of now-Mayor Justin Bibb during his election campaign, but was strongly opposed by the Cleveland Police Patrolmen's association as well as then-Police Chief Calvin Williams.

According to the city of Cleveland, compensation for board members will be $8,963 per year. To apply for a board position, submit a resume with work history and a cover letter to Ryan Puente, Chief Government Affairs Officer, at rpuente@clevelandohio.com by Friday, August 26.
