CLEVELAND — All three of Cleveland's major hospital systems -- Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals and MetroHealth -- have been listed among the world's most ethical companies.

The designation comes in the 2022 rankings by Ethisphere Institute, which describes itself as “advancing the standards of ethical business practices that fuel corporate character, marketplace trust and business success.”

Here are responses from all three:

CLEVELAND CLINIC

“Our culture is one that encourages all caregivers to do what’s right, to speak up when issues arise, to value inclusion and diversity, to treat patients and fellow caregivers as family and, of course, to provide the best healthcare anywhere,” said Donald A. Sinko, Cleveland Clinic’s Chief Integrity Officer. “Caring for every patient is a lifetime partnership built on trust. And integrity is our foundational value on which trust is built.”

Cleveland Clinic was first recognized in the Ethisphere rankings back in 2009. They've made the list 12 times.

UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS

“Our goal is to establish University Hospitals as Northeast Ohio’s most trusted health care partner,” said Cliff A. Megerian, MD, FACS, University Hospitals Chief Executive Officer; Jane and Henry Meyer Chief Executive Officer Distinguished Chair. “As part of this journey, we developed a roadmap to sharpen our differentiation, guide our future investments and provide a cultural foundation for lighting the way that includes relentless focus on our core values of service excellence, integrity, compassion, belonging and trust. In fact, ‘integrity’ means we have a shared commitment to do what is right and adhere to the highest standards of ethics and personal responsibility to earn the trust of our caregivers and community. In action, this means we empower our caregivers to ‘Speak-Up’ when they have a concern or ideas on how to improve the quality of care and the work environment that surrounds us. I am grateful to our more than 30,000 caregivers of character who make our health system a great place for patient care and to work.”

This is their 10th appearance on the list.

METROHEALTH

“This past year was difficult for our community and our nation, but we emerged stronger than ever and looking forward,” said MetroHealth CEO and President Akram Boutros, MD, FACHE. “We went into the neighborhoods and met people where they are with COVID vaccines and testing. We are opening a new hospital that is already transforming the neighborhood, and another hospital to fill a desperate need for treating mental illness and substance abuse. We are devoted to hope, health and humanity, and our actions demonstrate it every day.”

This is the third consecutive year on the list.

“Today, business leaders face their greatest mandate yet to be ethical, accountable and trusted to drive positive change,” said Ethisphere CEO, Timothy Erblich. “We continue to be inspired by the World’s Most Ethical Companies honorees and their dedication to integrity, sustainability, governance and community.”

Ethisphere’s assessment process includes more than 200 questions on corporate culture, environmental and social practices, governance, diversity, initiatives to support strong values, and ethics and compliance activities.
