MetroHealth System's Dr. David Margolius named Cleveland’s Director of Public Health

Dr. Margolius is currently the division director of internal medicine for MetroHealth System in Northeast Ohio.

Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb announced MetroHealth’s Dr. Daivd Margolius as Cleveland’s new Director of Public Health on Wednesday morning.

The announcement comes while Cuyahoga County currently is at a high COVID-19 Community Level, according to the CDC

Dr. Margolius currently serves as the division director of internal medicine at MetroHealth System in Cleveland.

“We are pleased to welcome such an accomplished clinician and researcher to lead our public health work at this critical time when Cuyahoga County is once again seeing high transmission of COVID-19,” said Mayor Bibb. “In addition to his medical expertise, Dr. Margolius also has a strong record of leadership and community service, and he cares deeply about addressing health disparities in our communities.”

In Northeast Ohio, Dr. Margolius also serves as a leader in education. He serves as an associate professor in the School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University and faculty co-lead for the Medical Director Leadership Institute at Harvard Medical School’s Center for Primary Care. 

Throughout his career, he has been published in many peer-reviewed journals on public health topics such as the COVID-19 in underserved communities, the opioid crisis, preventative medicine and family medicine.

Dr. Margolius graduated with a medical degree from Alpert Medical School at Brown University and a Bachelor of Arts in biology at Brown. 

At the University of California, San Francisco, he completed his residency in internal medicine. Prior to returning to Cleveland and joining MetroHealth System, he worked as the Chief Resident of Quality Improvement and Patient Safety at the University of California, San Francisco. 

Dr. Margolius currently lives in Old Brooklyn with his wife and two children.
