CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Division of Fire is mourning the loss of one of its firefighters, Shawn Calvey, who died after a battle against cancer.
Calvey's death was announced in a Facebook post from Cleveland Fire Fighters IAFF Local 93.
The beloved 37-year-old was an eight-year veteran of the Cleveland Division of Fire, working primarily out of Station 23 on the city's west side.
"Due to his endless work ethic, keen instincts, incredible strength, and great sense of humor, Shawn garnered universal respect and admiration from his peers. He served the people of Cleveland selflessly, displaying tenacity and courage in many life-saving incidents. Shawn was truly a larger-than-life figure and exemplified what it means to be a great Cleveland Firefighter," said Cleveland Fire Fighters IAFF Local 93 in a Facebook post.
According to a GoFundMe created for Calvey in July 2023, he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer two months earlier.

In addition, the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) is honoring Calvey's sacrifice in the line of duty. His family will be presented this week with an IAFF Medal of Honor. The state of Ohio will also recognize his death as an active Line of Duty Death.
Calvey was known as a family man in addition to being a firefighter. He was a "loving husband" to his wife, Kelley, and an "amazing father" to 6-year-old Landon and 3-year-old Madeline.
"When we look at Brother Calvey's life and legacy, we are comforted by the outpouring of love and support. He had a unique ability to care for all, making everyone feel welcome. If true friends are the measure of an individual’s wealth, Shawn was one of the world's wealthiest. Shawn, we will miss you dearly and remember you forever. Rest easy Brother, we will take it from here," continued Cleveland Fire Fighters IAFF Local 93 in a Facebook post.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Calvey will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday August 6 at St. Ambrose Church, 929 Pearl Road in Brunswick.
